World War Hulk #1

For those who don’t know, the Hulk was shot into space by the Illuminati (Dr. Strange, Tony Stark/Iron Man, Reed Richards, Black Bolt, and Prof. Charles Xavier) as he was deemed too dangerous to be left on Earth. The Illuminati had a nice little planet picked out, but nothing ever goes right for the Hulk. He crashed landed on a war planet and had the same, kinda, storyline as the movie Gladiator. Except Hulk didn’t die at the end, he became king and brought peace to the planet. As the Hulk was accepting this new place in the universe, his damaged ship had a warp core breach and nuked the entire planet. Hulk is forced to watch his new home burn and his pregnant wife turn to dust in his hands. Hulk has good reason for wanting vengeance.
Now from Greg Pak, John Romita Jr., Klaus Janson, Christina Strain, and cover by David Finch comes the first official issue of World War Hulk (WWH). We see Hulk land on the moon and take on his first target, Black Bolt. Most of this fight happens off panel, which I liked because what we saw was uber-cool and I it gave us just enough to see the huge mad-on Hulk’s got going. We also see the civilized side of the Hulk as he gives warning to the people on Manhattan Island, “You have 24 twenty-four house to evacuate. When I return, I want to see Mr. Fantastic, Iron Man, and Dr. Strange”. This is obviously not the mindless beast.
I won’t go into much more of the story, but I do have to say that this is the book brought me back to Marvel. The writing by Greg Pak is awesome and art by John Romita Jr is always great. I recommend picking this one up.
Story: A
Art: A+
Overall Series: A (but we are only one issue in)
